Sedation, when you need it

Treatment under sedation is available with our partner clinic, Medical Town, right next door to us. It can help you get past a fear of the dentist, make long or complex treatment calmer, or make treatment possible when your health needs closer medical control.

The roles are clear. Medical Town's anaesthesia and intensive care doctors provide and monitor the sedation, under intensive care regulations. Our team does the dental treatment, in a dental suite Dentcof built at Medical Town.

How it works, in three steps

  1. We review your health history and your treatment plan with you, and talk about whether sedation suits you.
  2. Medical Town's anaesthesia and intensive care team assesses you and chooses the method: conscious sedation or general anaesthesia.
  3. On the day, the Medical Town team provides and monitors the sedation while our team does the dental treatment.

Monitored from start to finish

Sedation follows Medical Town's intensive care rules: a medical assessment beforehand, continuous monitoring, emergency protocols and supervised recovery, all run by its doctors. This closer control also makes treatment possible for many patients with complex medical conditions.

Relax, or sleep, through treatment

With sedation you can relax fully, or sleep, while we work. Every step follows one design, and our lab prepares the guides and temporaries from it beforehand, so several dental steps can often share one longer session and many patients need fewer visits. The plan stays the same, and so does the team: the dentists who planned your treatment carry it out.

When sedation helps

The decision is made with Medical Town's doctors, based on your medical and emotional needs. Sedation is often considered for:

  • People with strong anxiety, low pain tolerance or a past bad experience at the dentist
  • Long or complex treatment, for a calmer experience
  • Children over 3 with special needs or behavioural challenges
  • People with medical conditions that complicate treatment
  • People with a strong gag reflex

Risks and limitations

Every treatment has possible side effects. Here is what you should know before deciding. We go through your own risks at the consultation.

Possible risks and side effects

  • Drowsiness for several hours: you need someone to take you home and must not drive that day
  • Nausea or headache in some patients
  • Rare reactions to sedative drugs, managed by the monitoring anaesthesia team

When it may not be suitable, or needs extra care

  • Some heart, lung or sleep-apnoea conditions, assessed in a medical review before sedation
  • Pregnancy

This is general information; your diagnosis comes from an examination. Your doctor will explain the risks that apply to you before you agree to any treatment.

Sedation dentistry: frequently asked questions

Is sedation safe if I have a chronic medical condition?+

Often, yes. Medical Town's doctors approve sedation only after a full medical review, and they monitor every step. Some heart, lung or sleep-apnoea conditions mean sedation is not the right choice; the review shows whether that applies to you.

Who gives the sedation?+

Medical Town's anaesthesia and intensive care doctors. Our dentists do the dental treatment at the same time, in the dental suite at Medical Town.

Can I travel from abroad for treatment under sedation?+

Yes. We can start the medical screening remotely and help you plan travel timing and recovery.

Is sedation available for children?+

Yes, from age 3, when Medical Town's doctors agree, with protocols made for children.
