Soft Tissue Grafts

Healthy is the new beautiful

A gingival graft is a micro-surgery that will transplant a bulk of soft tissue - free gingiva or connective tissue ( the internal layer of gingiva ) to cover a soft tissue defect. Usually this type of procedures is required to augment implants, or to cover defects caused by periodontal disease or trauma. The grafts are harvested from the third molar region or the palate, and are transported where they are needed.

This type of procedure is a very delicate one, using the same type of blades like the ones used in ophthalmology and the sutures are also very thin. The sutures will be removed after 7-14 days, depending on the case, when primary healing is achieved. The maturation of the graft will take roughly 90 days, this is the reason why, when placing implants we prefer to also do the graft, so we can sync the healing time for both procedures.

Digital planning. Individualized procedures

Every case is planned digitally and executed with the most suitable procedure. The philosophy used to select the most suitable procedure, is the ratio between the most long lasting result, and the least invasive procedure. Guided surgery

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?

The surgery is painless, performed under local anesthesia. After the surgery, there can be a mild sensitivity for a few days.

Will I be all swollen?

No. Mild swelling may occur on the local site, but not major swelling.

Do I need time off work?

No, but we recommend that this type of procedures to be scheduled at the end of the working week, for more comfort for the patient.

Although smoking is not an absolute contra-indication, it is a major one. We recommend that patients completely quit smoking or severely reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke. Gingival grafts have the same precautions as dental implants. Read more about precautions here.
